Press Release - National Multi-Stakeholder Consultation for the Global Compact for Migration (GCM)
Nairobi –The International Organization for Migration (IOM), as Coordinator and Secretariat of the UN Network on Migration, in collaboration with the Government of Kenya, under the National Coordination Mechanism of Migration (NCM) organized a one-day multi-stakeholder consultation for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) implementation, follow up and review process at the Crowne Plaza Nairobi on 9 May 2022.
Representatives from different ministries, departments and agencies, county government officials, civil society organizations, academia, and other UN agencies, participated in the meeting to discuss the efforts and challenges when implementing and reviewing the Global Compact on Migration.
UN Kenya Resident Coordinator Dr. Stephen Jackson stated, “By adopting the GCM, Kenya committed to cooperating with other member states to respond to the needs of migrants in situations of vulnerability.”
The meeting has provided input to update the Kenyan Voluntary GCM Review Report in preparation for the upcoming first International Migration Review Forum that will take place at UN Headquarters in New York on 17-20 May .
The Director General of the Directorate of Immigration and Citizen Services Mr Alexander Muteshi reiterated his support to all the NCM stakeholders, he stated “that they move together in implementing the GCM compact and that they will review practices and policies that are adept to the Kenyan reality”.
