U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Meets with IOM Kenya to Discuss Pre-Departure Health Assessment for Refugees and Migrants

Nairobi - On March 23, 2024, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary Andrea Palm met with IOM Kenya Chief of Mission, Dimanche Sharon, Regional Health Assessment Coordinator Dr. Dimitri and Chief Migration Health Officer, Dr. Mukunda of Africa at IOM Migration Health Assessment Center in Nairobi.

The meeting aimed to recognize IOM-US historic relationship and ongoing partnership with the CDC. The delegation included Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs Loyce Pace and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dr. Mandy Cohen. Discussions centered around the processes for pre-departure health assessment for prospective refugees and migrant to the United States of America.

This visit reaffirmed the critical role CDC and IOM play in building and sustaining health rights. In addition, the delegation had an opportunity to interact with refugees’ families who have been medically cleared for resettlement in the United States of America.
