The diaspora make a significant impact on a country’s development through remittances, investment, philanthropy, skills’ transfer and more. Remittances are arguably the best measured contribution that they make. Remittance inflows, however, are likely to be much larger because official figures do not account for money transferred through informal channels (for example, when money is sent through hawala or in the pockets of relatives and friends). This provides more insight into the role of the diaspora in the overall development of the Kenyan economy.
